Hospitality, Tourism and Events

The mission of the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department is to provide demonstrated leadership and excellence in its baccalaureate, professional and technical programs and to render service to the students, citizens and hospitality industry of the State of Colorado. The Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department provides flexible and individualized interdisciplinary major programs with concentrations that include hotel, restaurant, tourism, and events management.

Goals

The goals of the department are:

  1. Provide instruction and professional assistance to students.
  2. Assist students in the development of professionalism and an attitude of continued professional growth and individual development.
  3. Assist students to recognize their responsibilities as members of the hospitality industry and society.
  4. Prepare students for graduate study in Hospitality, and Tourism and Events and related fields.
  5. Provide seminars and workshops for the hospitality industry within Colorado and beyond.
  6. Conduct applied research in the field of hospitality.
  7. Increase the quality and accessibility of hospitality education to citizens of Colorado and beyond.
  8. Provide professional assistance to the hospitality industry and citizens of Colorado.

Programs

Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Hospitality, Tourism and Events Department have four concentration options:

Hotel Management Concentration prepares students for operations and management positions in various segments of the hotel, motel, lodging and resort industries.

Restaurant Management Concentration prepares students for operations and management positions in commercial and institutional food service areas such as restaurants, clubs, culinary administration, hotels, resorts, schools, colleges, health care, business and industry in plant feeding and catering.

Tourism Management Concentration prepares students for planning, operating, managing, selling, and marketing tourism projects with tour operators, destination management companies, adventure travel businesses, ecotourism companies, cruise lines, volunteer services, convention and visitor bureaus, and sustainability organizations.

Events Management Concentration prepares students for planning events, meetings, conferences, conventions, special events, and tradeshows for both corporate and nonprofit organizations.

Minors

The Department offers five minors: hotel, restaurant, beverage, tourism, and events management.  These minors are open to students at Metro State majoring in a field of study other than HTE.  The minors provide specialized knowledge on the application of business and management principles specific to the area of concentration.

Certificate Programs for Prior Degree Students

The Department offers five certificate programs: hotel, restaurant, beverage, tourism, and events management.  These programs are specifically designed to assist prior degree students in gaining the skills and practices necessary to support career changes into the hospitality profession. 

Degree Requirements

To be awarded a degree, students must complete a total of 120 credit hours to include: 33 credit hours of General Studies course requirements, 3 credit hours of the Multicultural graduation requirement, 3 credit hours of the Senior Experience graduation requirement, 39 credit hours of Major Core requirements, 18 to 24 credit hours of concentration requirements, and 20 credit hours of electives or a minor plus electives.
