Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Major with Elementary Licensure

A major in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) provides a sound background for candidates pursuing careers in education, health care, and vocational rehabilitation. Graduates in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences who complete the SLHS major will have the prerequisite coursework to pursue a graduate degree in speech-language pathology or audiology, which opens careers in schools, community clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practice. The Childhood Communication concentration within the SLHS major will provide early childhood and elementary educators with an option to concentrate their study of communication science in the area of language from birth to age 18. The Childhood Communication Concentration does not provide all required coursework to prepare students for graduate school admission in speech-language pathology or audiology or for the SLPA Certificate.

Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major in order to progress through the program. Courses with grades lower than “C” will need to be repeated in order for the student to progress to courses requiring that course as a prerequisite.

Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Major

General Studies Exception for Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences Major with Elementary Licensure (without the Childhood Communication Concentration): Students must take SPE 1010 and do not have the option of substituting SPE 1710 for this requirement. Students may substitute MTH 1610 and MTH 1620 for the MTH 1110 prerequisite for SLHS 2530 if they also pass a logarithm/exponent assessment administered by SLHS.
