Behavioral Science Major, B.A.

This distributed major offers students a structured overview of the social sciences. This program emphasizes breadth of coverage with a focus in an area selected by the student.
- Students not interested in pursuing any type of teacher licensure should refer to the General BHS concentration below.
- Students interested in secondary education social studies licensure should refer to the BHS1 concentration below.
- Students interested in elementary education licensure should refer to the BHS2 concentration below.
- This major is not available for students interested in early childhood education licensure.
The student must have preliminary approval of the selected program by an advisor from the Sociology, Anthropology and Behavioral Sciences Department. A minimum of 12 upper-division hours in the major must be taken at Metro State.

General Behavioral Science Concentration:
Elected Focus:
In addition to the introductory course, each student must select 12 hours in one of the following social science disciplines: anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, or sociology. A minimum of 9 upper-division hours must be selected with the approval of an advisor. General Electives:
An additional 12 hours must be selected from any of the disciplines outside of the elected focus. Courses may be selected from anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, or sociology. At least 9 of these hours must be upper division. No more than 6 hours may be taken in any one discipline. General Studies Requirements:
The student is expected to complete all General Studies requirements as stated in this Catalog. The student may use up to 6 hours from the required courses for the behavioral science major to complete the social science component. Senior Experience:
Selection of a Senior Experience course will vary according to the student’s needs. Students may select any capstone course for which they have completed the prerequisites.
No minor is offered. Behavioral Science Major with Secondary Social Studies Licensure:
This distributed major offers students a structured overview of the social sciences (Anthropology, Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology). This program emphasizes breadth of coverage with a focus in history. This major is particularly applicable for students interested in teacher licensure at the secondary level. Licensure candidates are expected to complete a minor in Secondary Education. A special emphasis will be placed on history. The program addresses the Colorado Model Content Standards in Social Studies and prepares licensure candidates to pass the required content exam. Students should seek advising in both Behavioral Science and Teacher Education prior to and during the completion of this concentration. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major in order to progress through the program. Courses with grades of less than “C” must be repeated. Successful program completion requires a major GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Students should check with their Teacher Education advisor for specific GPA requirements necessary for student teaching eligibility.

The following courses fulfill the General Studies Level I and Level II requirements for Metro State and the Behavioral Science BHS2 Concentration. Exceptions to the following required General Studies courses must be approved in writing in advance by the Teacher Education Department.

Students pursuing the Secondary Education minor will fulfill their multicultural requirement within the minor coursework. Senior Experience Requirement
Licensure students are expected to fulfill the Senior Experience requirement with EDS 4290 - Student Teaching and Seminar.
Students not electing to complete licensure may fulfill the Senior Experience requirement by selecting any approved capstone course for which they have fulfilled the necessary prerequisites. Required Focus in History (9 hours must be upper division):

This distributed major is designed to prepare students for classroom teaching in the elementary education system. Students are expected to complete a minor in Elementary Education in conjunction with this concentration. Students should seek advising in both Behavioral Science and Teacher Education prior to and during the completion of this concentration. Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major in order to progress through the program. Courses with grades of less than “C” must be repeated. Successful program completion requires a major GPA of 2.0 or higher.

- A minimum of six courses (18 credit hours) must be upper division.
- Seven courses from the approved list below must be in GEG, HIS, and PSC.
- At least one course must be selected from each of the above disciplines.
- Only one lower division course may be included from the above disciplines.
- One course from ANT/SOC.
