The Leadership Awareness in Crisis Planning badge is a competency badge offered through the Rita and Navin Dimond Department of Hotel Management. Completing this badge demonstrates having an overview of the skills and tools industry leaders can use to prepare for crises and enable disaster recovery (when necessary) within their organizations as well as implement preventions that will reduce the likelihood and impact of five relevant crises - public health emergencies, natural disasters, infrastructure failures, major technology breaches, and terrorist attacks.  

Earning Criteria

Participants earning this badge are required to participate in online or in-person module training related to leadership styles and five relevant crises, complete certificate-based training workshops related to micro-credential content, complete a Leadership Case Study, a Crisis Planning Playbook addressing five relevant crises (public health emergencies, natural disasters, infrastructure failures, major technology breaches, and terrorist attacks), submit written reflections on leadership styles, a final applied learning project, and a Leadership Skills Inventory.

Competencies Demonstrated

  1. Understand the scope of five crisis situations that can occur in industry, including public health emergencies, natural disasters, infrastructure failures, major technology breaches, and terrorist attacks.
  2. Describe six common types of leadership styles i.e., transformational, charismatic, transactional, participative, servant, and situational. 
  3. Understand and apply tools to support an exampled Public Health Emergency.
  4. Summarize the value of Contingency and Situational Leadership in crisis management.  
  5. Complete certificate-based training workshops related to micro-credential content (e.g., CPR, active shooter training).
  6. Build understanding in crises scenarios to plan for Natural Disasters.
  7. Articulate the theory of Path-Goal Leadership Style geared towards problem-solving skills.
  8. Build understanding in crises scenarios to plan for Infrastructure Failures.
  9. Build understanding in crises scenarios to plan for Technology Breaches.
  10. Articulate the theory of Hershey-Blanchard Leadership Style geared towards decision making and follower readiness.
  11. Build understanding in crises scenarios to plan for a Terrorist Attack / Active Shooter.
  12. Articulate the theory of Vroom/Jago Leadership Style geared towards decision-making skills and leader expertise.
  13. Synthesize the results of knowledge gained through previous modules to formulate the final project.
