K-12 Physical Education Concentration

Candidates who wish to obtain Colorado Licensure for K-12 Physical Education must earn a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Human Performance and Sport with a concentration in Physical Education. Physical Education majors are required to complete courses in: Professional activities, the core curriculum (including Physical Education Methods, Anatomical Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, and Motor Learning), as well as required licensure courses.

Licensure candidates need to meet with a K-12 Physical Education advisor as well as an advisor in Teacher Education.

Adult Fitness and Exercise Science Concentration

This concentration is designed for students interested in the adult fitness and exercise science profession. Examples of professions in the adult fitness and exercise science field include: cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, physical medicine clinics, research, public and private industry wellness programs, worksite health promotion, recreation center wellness, and personal training for general and special populations.

Students with aspirations in the exercise science field through advanced degree work in exercise physiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or as a physician’s assistant will find the adult fitness and exercise science curriculum provides a solid foundation and includes many required prerequisites for those programs.

Students must have a 2.75 major GPA and must have completed all AFES major courses in order to be eligible for an internship.

All students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Performance and Sport-Adult Fitness and Exercise Science are required to complete a professional certification prior to graduation. The certification must be either 1) Health Fitness Specialist - American College of Sports Medicine, or 2) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist - National Strength and Conditioning Association or permission of instructor. All courses in the program will prepare the student for the certification.

The department recommends that students take HPS 2060 - Emergency Rescue/First Responder & CPR or verify equivalent certification.
