Linguistically Diverse Education Minor


Linguistically Diverse Education Minor Courses


Option 1: Linguistically Diverse Education Minor:


Intermediate fluency in a language other than English is required. This fluency can be satisfied by the completion of at least two semesters (10 credits) in one foreign language at an accredited college with grades of “C” or better or by providing a satisfactory test score from a recognized foreign language proficiency exam (for Spanish this is a score of at least 400 on the BYU Spanish Language Proficiency exam), An initial license area is needed. The student completes a 3 credit field experience course in culturally and linguistically diverse education.

Option 2: Linguistically Diverse Education Minor


with recommendation for the additional Colorado Department of Education endorsement as Linguistically Diverse Education: ESL Specialist

A student must complete the requirements for Option 1 with the 3 credit field experience course replaced by an eight week Linguistically Diverse Student Teaching course (LDE 4590, 6 credits). In addition, the student must complete eight weeks of student teaching in an elementary, secondary, or early childhood classroom working with a cooperating teacher in the student’s initial licensure area (6 credits). A student must pass the content test in their initial licensure area prior to applying for student teaching. The student must pass the Linguistically Diverse: ESL Specialist PLACE Test prior to applying for ESL endorsement.

Option 3: Linguistically Diverse Education Minor


with recommendation for the additional Colorado Department of Education endorsement as Linguistically Diverse Education: Bilingual Specialist

A student must complete the requirements for Option 2 with the eight week Linguistically Diverse Student Teaching course completed in a bilingual classroom (LDE 4690, 6 credits). In addition, the student must score a minimum score of 400 on the BYU Spanish language proficiency exam or have satisfactorily completed the requirements for a major in Spanish or for Spanish endorsement, satisfactorily complete a course in teaching literacy and content in Spanish (LDE 3950), and pass the Spanish Language PLACE Test. The student must pass the Linguistically Diverse: Bilingual Specialist PLACE Test prior to applying for Bilingual endorsement.
