ARTH 3441 - Caravaggio, Bernini, Velázquez: Baroque Art in Italy and Spain

Prerequisite(s): ARTH 1700 with a “C-” or better or permission of department.
Description: Students in this course explore the artistic creations produced during the 17th century in Italy and Spain, including Caravaggio, Bernini, Velázquez, and Murillo. They will also study the religious, social, scientific, and political transformations that greatly impacted the kinds of art desired and produced. Cultural changes, such as the Counter-Reformation, changing patterns of patronage, the creation of art collections by the elite, and global colonial projects impacted the production of paintings, sculptures, prints, and architectural spaces during this period will also be examined.
