School of Hospitality, Events and Tourism


The mission of the School of Hospitality, Events, and Tourism is to provide demonstrated leadership and excellence in its baccalaureate, professional and technical programs and to render service to the students, citizens and hospitality industry of the State of Colorado. The School of  Hospitality,  Events, and Tourism provides flexible and individualized interdisciplinary majors in Hotel Management, Restaurant Management, Travel and Tourism Management Event and Meeting Management, Brewery Operations and Craft Brewing and Pub Operations.

School of HEaT Goals

The goals of the School are to:

  • Provide instruction and professional assistance to students.
  • Assist students in the development of professionalism and an attitude of continued professional growth and individual development.
  • Assist students to recognize their responsibilities as members of the hospitality, tourism, and event industries and society.
  • Prepare students for graduate study in Hospitality, Events and Tourism and related fields.
  • Provide seminars and workshops for the Hospitality, Events and Tourism industries within Colorado and beyond.
  • Conduct applied research in the fields of Hospitality, Events and Tourism.
  • Increase the quality and accessibility of Hospitality, Events and Tourism education to citizens of Colorado and beyond.
  • Provide professional assistance to the Hospitality, Events and Tourism industries and citizens of Colorado.

School of HEaT Student Requirements

  • Meet with HEaT faculty and review a Degree Progress Report within the first semester of enrolling in MSU Denver
  • Declare one of the School’s Majors of student or relevant Minors or Certificates.
  • For any Bachelor of Science Degree, present verification of 600 clock hours of on the job experience in any hospitality-related field prior to graduation. These hours may be secured through paid job experience, cooperative education, or any combination thereof.This requirement does not apply to Brewery Operations or Craft Brewing and Pub Operations degrees.
  • Present Adult CPR, AED training, and First Aid Certification to the School of HEaT Administration Assistant or Advisor prior to graduation.
  • Maintain a grade point average of 2.5.
  • A grade of “C” or better is requirement for courses in all HTE programs to count toward a Bachelor’s Degree. Students should note that programs throughout the University differ in the minimum grade required.

Bachelor of Science in Brewery Operations

The Bachelor of Science in Brewery Operations is a degree program designed for students and professionals looking to break into or further their career within the competitive brewing industry. Created for those wishing to have baccalaureate level training and for those looking to gain vital credentials and certifications, this degree will prepare them for the challenges they will face once they are employed in the world of beer.  Beer Industry professionals are involved in the brewhouse operations, hospitality, management, marketing, logistics, sensory development and scientific analysis of beer in a  professional setting. The Bachelor of Science degree program in Brewery Operations provides a broad foundation in: 1) practical understanding and implementation of the brewing process and the ingredients of beer, 2) chemical and biological analysis and improvement of beer, 3) brewery management and operations, 4) serving, sensory, and hospitality in the world of beer, 5) packaging techniques, and draft system design 6)  logistical and legal operations of the beer supply chain, 7) professional applications of theoretical knowledge. The Beer Industry Program offers two  of the few bachelor degrees related specifically to beer and the brewing industry in the world. It is particularly unique because it is based out of the School of Hospitality, Events, and Tourism and is not exclusively a food science degree.

Bachelor of Science in Craft Brewing & Pub Operations

The Bachelor of Science in Craft Brewing & Pub Operations is a degree program designed for students and professionals looking to break into or further their career within the competitive brewing industry, with a particular focus on small tasting rooms and brewpubs that often have a culinary component to their business. Created for those wishing to have baccalaureate level training and for those looking to gain vital credentials and certifications, this degree will prepare them for the challenges they will face once they are employed in a working brewpub or craft brewery. Brewpub professionals are involved in the operations, hospitality, management, marketing, sensory development, and scientific analysis of beer in a professional setting as well as the operations and management of restaurants where beer is brewed. The Bachelor of Science degree program in Craft Brewing & Pub Operations provides a broad foundation in: 1)practical understanding and implementation of the brewing process and the ingredients of beer, 2) brewpub management and operations, 3) restaurant, service and hospitality management in a brewpub setting, 4) draft quality and system design, 5) chemical, biological, and sensory analysis of beer, 6) professional applications of theoretical knowledge.  The Beer Industry Program offers two of the few bachelor degrees related specifically to beer and the brewing industry in the world. Bachelor of Science in Event and Meeting Management

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Event and Meeting Management prepares students to become leaders in various segments of the fast growing event industry (e.g. conferences, conventions, trade shows/exhibitions, special events, weddings, corporate, government, and non-profit fundraising events). Students learn the diverse components of Event and Meeting Management including, strategic planning, vendor services, onsite operations, technology, risk management, and evaluation. The curriculum allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge into practice by participating in local, national, and international conventions and special events. Internships and extracurricular activities via student clubs also play an important role in course enhancement and learning experiences. With the high impact learning experiences, students are better prepared for the fast-changing Event and Meeting Management job market.

Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Hotel Management offers a diverse approach to meeting the educational needs of the lodging industry professional.  Students are immersed in a rigorous academic environment that not only encourages both critical thinking at the management theory level, as well as applying such theory to formulate solutions to complex management problems. This diverse approach allows students to develop skill sets in human resources, property management, legal issues, marketing, accounting, revenue management, and strategic management, among others.

Bachelor of Science in Restaurant Management

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Restaurant Management is designed for the student who is seeking upward mobility in foods-based industries, including restaurants, hotels, catering, food sales, food production and distribution, and nonprofits specializing in foods. Additionally, students have options to include wine studies, beer studies and urban agriculture classes to complete their degree. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Restaurant Management provides a broad-based knowledge in 1) culinary arts, 2) wines, beer and spirits, 3) several levels of accounting, 4) human resources, 5) legal issues, and 6) strategic management and leadership.

Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tourism Management

The Bachelor of Science in Travel and Tourism Management, Leisure Tourism Minor, Corporate Travel Minor, Travel Consultant Certificate, and Corporate Travel Certificate are programs designed for professionals wishing to seek a career in the largest industry and the largest employer in the world and the second largest employer in Colorado: the Travel and Tourism Industry. The degree, minor, and certificate programs provide two distinct, yet related concentrations of study in leisure tourism or corporate travel.

Certificate Programs

The School of Hospitality, Events, and Tourism offers certificate programs, specifically designed to help students gain the skills and practices necessary to support career changes into the hospitality profession.

Requirements for Certificates

Students must be accepted to the University and take courses for credit. The cost of the program is the same as undergraduate tuition for degree-seeking students. The credits achieved may also be applied to an additional bachelor’s degree if the student elects to major in one of the School’s degree programs. Students with similar courses in their prior higher education experience may request courses be transferred to meet part of the certificate requirements. At least 60% of credits in the certificate must be taken at MSU Denver and a grade of “C” or better is required. Only one substitution of required courses is allowed.
